Dave

Dave slumped down beside Vivian. He didn’t know what to do. He was sure he’d go to jail. He’d shot two men, after all, one of which was his friend. This trip had seemed like the ideal plan when they were organizing it all last winter and then packing and getting ready in the spring. They’d both had to make arrangements to be gone from their jobs for the entire summer and every one of their friends was supportive and now everything he’d ever wanted, was gone. All he’d ever wanted after his adoptive parents had died was a family of his own.

He sat there in the dirt holding Vivian, wishing they hadn’t met the researcher that day. He chased a couple of turkey vultures away from the corpse of Murphy, who thankfully never moved again. He took the gun with him everywhere he went. Even to the bathroom and when he checked obsessively on the corpses of Murphy and the researcher.

He inspected the radio. It was thoroughly trashed and didn’t work at all. Without the radio, he had no way of knowing when the rescue team was coming, or if they were even going to. Maybe they were all dead, too.

He scratched his shoulder where Murphy had bitten him. He’d forgotten about it, but now he was in the washroom inspecting the wound in the mirror. It didn’t look too bad, hurt worse than it looked. It was barely a red mark. The blood on the shirt must have come from Murphy, he decided.

He heard a noise behind him. Forcing himself to face whatever it was, he went to check it out, gun raised defensively. He lowered the gun when he saw her through the doorframe of the main entrance.

She crouched over Murphy’s body, doing something to him.

Dave couldn’t see what, so he moved closer to the door.

“Vivian?” he asked quietly as he got closer. He looked out, horrified. She wasn’t checking on Murphy.

She was eating him.

She tore a chunk off his face with inhuman strength.

“Vivian!” he shouted, aghast and disgusted. “What are you doing?”

She whirled on him, snarling, and launched herself at him. Instinctively, he fired.

He didn’t miss this time. There was only one shot.
